The benefits of fluoride. And its drawbacks
The fluorine is an essential element that is used to prevent tooth decay, both during the development of teeth and after their complete eruption. Has a high ability to block the activity of bacterial plaque and also reduces the demineralization of enamel and supports its remineralization. Fluoride occurs naturally in many foods and beverages like tea, coffee, potatoes, whole meal bread, spinach, peas, and especially water, is also added in toothpastes, gels for use in oral and mouthwashes.
It ‘been shown that the effectiveness of fluoroprofilassi is greater the earlier it is the beginning of this method of prevention. For over twenty years, this preventive measure was introduced by the scientific community and has demonstrated a net reduction of caries in children.
For some dentists, the fluoroprofilassi should start already during pregnancy from the second quarter, namely at the stage where the fetus, the formation of dental tissues, to continue to the end of pregnancy. The administration of fluoride to the expectant mother poses no risk to the fetus (if you follow the dosage down) because the placenta allows the passage of only one quarter the recommended dose during pregnancy. The rest of the fluoride is excreted by the mother (50%) or is absorbed by the bones of the mother (the remaining 25%). Therefore the child takes a dose equal to that which will have after birth.
The advantages of fluoroprofilassi also not limited to teeth. Indeed the ‘fluoride intake results in an advantage for the formation of the skeleton because fluoride increases bone density. However, the administration of fluoride drops or tablets should be prescribed through only after the knowledge of the concentration of fluoride in the water taken from the mother and child (mineral water and / or water supply) should not be prescribed fluoride supplements for children under 6 months, or who take water with fluoride levels greater than 0.6 mg / L.
Allergies are the disease of the future
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology has published a study that calls for the allergy as a disease of the future. Infectious diseases in the coming years will be overtaken by those allergic particularly in cities of developing countries that are experiencing rapid population growth.
The study carried out by analysis of the last 5-10 years in which it was noted the increasing incidence of eczema in children The chief investigator Hywel Williams said the cause of this increase is due to environmental changes because they are ruled out genetic factors as they may cause a change so fast.
This perspective has to be considered having regard to the serious economic impact that is generated in family life. Eczema is an inflammatory disease of the skin, chronic and itchy. Causes redness and creates efflorescence events including macules, papules, pustules, scales, crusts and blistering skin lesions and even scratching.
Treatments require an outlay rates equal to that of ‘asthma. In fact, treatment is ongoing and requires in addition to specific drugs, including antihistamines and corticosteroids, and we may add the phototherapy, much used, based on narrow-band UVB and UVA1.
More are to be calculated in all treatment “for local use, i.e. treatments and soothing emollients to be applied directly to the skin along with the environmental adaptation of the places where we live, and the places that families should try to eliminate the factors that trigger allergy and irritant eczema: from substances such as detergents, inhalants or contact substances that worsen the conditions of the subject, as well as food, among which we also buy special ones or special diets.
The study organized by Dr. Hywel Williams was made about 300 thousand children aged between 13 and 14 years of 55 states and in children aged 6 to 7 years from 35 countries. Children which seen at treatment centers usually for allergies. The analysis of this trial study showed a reduction of cases of eczema in European countries such as England, Ireland, Germany and Sweden. A significant increase was observed in countries like Mexico, Chile, Kenya, Algeria and South-East Asia. Finally an increase in cases of eczema in the last 5-10years was found among all the younger children and among most of the countries analyzed.
As regards the trigger environmental changes mean that the solution lies not only with new and appropriate public health policies, even with effective environmental policies.
The therapeutic and cosmetic carrot
The carrot is one of the most common plants in antiquity and continues to be still in our century. It was well known quality food and perhaps a little less than therapeutic and cosmetic properties.
The juice of its root is rich in carotene, orange-yellowish color pigment that can be considered pro-vitamin, as once introduced into the body will be turned into animal vitamin.
Beyond this provitamin, the juice is also rich in B vitamins and vitamin C. This explains why the tonic action of carrot juice and effective use in some diseases of the eye. Important to remember that the effectiveness of the juice is constrained by the fact that should be taken raw because heat denatures the properties of the various principles contained in it. In children is taken from 50 to 150 gr. juice obtained by squeezing or centrifuging to drink during the day.
In adults, change the quantity: if they recommend 150 to 300 gr. day. For the treatment of cough and laryngitis: 4 or 5 carrots thoroughly cooked boiling at length, are crushed and then passed through a sieve (such as for flour), everything is mixed with 4 or 5 tablespoons of honey and used to taking spoons during the day. It was useful in obstinate coughs and laryngitis.
As cosmetics: widely used the oily extract of the roots of carrot for the wealth of carotenes exerts an important action in maintaining the integrity of the membrane function of cells and tissues of the skin. It improves the condition of dry and chapped, especially in winter.
Inflammation and skin rashes, even the sun: the raw flesh between two patches, applied on it. To make the skin smooth: 10 gr. dried root in 100 ml. oil (marinated for two days), applied with a light massage.
Finally remember the protective properties, moisturizing and firming due to the action of ultraviolet UV, from which the freeze-dried extract protects us.
